Organic Kids Clothes
Many people are now looking a lot more closely at the clothes that they buy. What are they made from? Where are they made? How are they made? For the conscious minded of you, this means buying organic clothing.
Why should I buy organic kids clothing?
There are many reasons as to why parents are converting to buying organic clothing for their kids, and even themselves including being kinder to skin, much more sustainable to the planet as well as addressing ethical labour concerns for the farmers.
Most of our wardrobes are filled with conventional cotton, when this cotton is grown it is sprayed with pesticides. 10% of these pesticides fight off the bugs on the cotton plant whilst the rest is absorbed into the air, soil, plant, water and into our bodies. It’s a well known fact that pesticides are toxic chemicals and cause major harm not only to people but to the eco-system too.
This conventional cotton is subject to bleach, heavy metal dyes and formaldehyde resins in the manufacturing process. GM cotton also accounts for 75% of conventionally grown cotton.
Why is organic cotton better?
There are many reasons as to why organic cotton is better for you and the planet, but it basically eliminates all of the above negative factors. It practices safe and sustainable practices, natural fertilisers, free from toxic chemicals as well as ethical labour processes.
Organic standards are very strict, a cotton field must be pesticide free for a least 3 years to be certified as organic and they must meet the International organic standards.
How will organic benefit my kids?
As you know babies and children’s skin is extremely delicate and in the first few months it is very absorbent too, making it more prone to allergic and irritant reactions from chemicals. Exposure to bleaches and chemicals can cause harm by irritating the skin and can also cause dermatitis. Sometimes we forget just how pure our children’s bodies are.
Organic clothing used to be dull and boring, but not any more!
One of the biggest concerns that parents have about buying organic clothing is that it will cost a lot more. In most cases there isn’t actually much difference and if it is a little more then it is due to it not being economically possible to make it a cheaper outfit whilst using good materials, non toxic dyes, pay laborers a livable wage as well as decent working conditions.
Organic clothing for your kids will give you peace of mind.
If you don’t already buy organic, don’t go mad and buy your child a whole new wardbrobe, just buy a few pieces at a time. Combine it with their existing clothes and gradually buy more organic pieces, you’ll be sure to see a difference.
